Did you know?
Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine that can appear S or C-shaped, that affects about 2-3% of the population. It can develop at any age but most commonly appears in children and adolescents during growth spurts. In more than 80% of cases, the cause of scoliosis is unknown, which is called idiopathic scoliosis.
Scoliosis treatments depend on the severity of the curve. Mild cases often require only regular monitoring to ensure the curve doesn’t worsen. For moderate cases, especially in growing children, a back brace may be recommended to prevent further curvature. In severe cases, or when the curve continues to progress, spinal fusion surgery may be necessary to straighten and stabilize the spine using rods, screws, and anchors.
Our Mission
Maritime Scoliosis Society (MSS) was founded to bridge gaps in scoliosis detection and care throughout Atlantic Canada. Building on the success of our signature charity golf event, Swing for Scoliosis, we are expanding beyond annual fundraising to lead initiatives that advocate for preventative care—reinstating school prescreening, ensuring equitable access to bracing for youth impacted by scoliosis, and strengthening collaboration with clinical partners. Our goal is to improve early detection, enhance access to treatment, and support ongoing community advocacy and research.
-
Early Detection in Schools
By partnering with health authorities, schools, and families, we aim to re-establish scoliosis screening programs throughout the Maritimes to strengthen early detection.
-
Bracing Support Fund
Our goal is to provide financial assistance to families facing gaps in health coverage, ensuring every child has access to properly fitted scoliosis bracing when they need it most.
-
Awareness & Support
One of our goals includes raising scoliosis awareness through education, outreach, and advocacy, as well as connecting families with reliable clinical resources and peer support networks.
Our Impact
Since our inaugural Swing for Scoliosis charity golf tournament, in 2023, we have proudly raised and donated $47,000 to the IWK Health Centre’s Orthopaedic Department
